In February 2022, my world turned upside down. During a mammogram to check out a lump in my right breast, I was told to stay for an ultrasound, and shortly after, I was urged to see an oncologist. A biopsy confirmed what I hoped wasn’t true: I had metaplastic breast cancer, a rare and aggressive form of the disease.

At just 41 years old, with a 4-year-old son, I was terrified. The information online was overwhelming, and I needed answers—and hope. That’s when I turned to NY Cancer and Blood Specialists and Memorial Sloan Kettering. From the moment I walked through their doors, I knew I was in the right place.

MSK’s Rare Breast Cancer Program was instrumental in my treatment. Led by experts who specialize in uncommon diagnoses like mine, the program ensures patients receive personalized care backed by the latest research. Metaplastic breast cancer is so rare that few doctors have experience with it, but my care team—including Dr. Giacomo Montagna and Dr. Pedram Razavi—gave me confidence every step of the way. They designed a treatment plan tailored to my specific cancer type, combining surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and reconstruction. I lovingly refer to this treatment plan as the kitchen sink. Their expertise, combined with MSK’s innovative approach, saved my life. I am not going to say it was easy, in fact it was the most challenging period in my life- juggling the fear and worry, two surgeries/recoveries, all of the chemotherapy, immunotherapy, side effects, while working, and trying to stay engaged in my family's life- being a mom to my young and energetic son and trying to be present for my amazing husband- was a lot!

Today, I am feeling better, still in treatment to ensure I am here for my family and monitoring regularly. I am filled with gratitude for the care received and continue to receive. That’s why I’m proud to support my cousin, who is running 101 miles to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research and MSK. His dedication inspires me, and I hope it inspires others to support the life-saving work being done at places like Memorial Sloan Kettering.

For anyone facing breast cancer—especially a rare diagnosis like mine—know this: you are not alone. Advocate for yourself, ask questions, and don’t hesitate to seek a second opinion. Amazing care and support are out there, and for me, the Rare Breast Cancer Program at MSK made all the difference.
